The brief

The homeowners wanted to strengthen the connection between their dining area and garden, creating a space that felt open and sociable without losing the solid feel of the existing property.

They were keen to achieve an open-plan layout that flowed naturally into the outside entertaining area, while ensuring the extension felt permanent, well insulated and architecturally balanced.

Our recommendation

We recommended a brick-built orangery with a central roof lantern to introduce overhead daylight while maintaining structural presence.

Wide-span bifolding doors were specified across the rear elevation to create a full-width opening onto the decking. This approach would allow the internal dining area to extend effortlessly outdoors during warmer months, while still providing excellent thermal performance when closed.

The proportions and materials were carefully aligned with the existing home to ensure the new space integrated seamlessly.

The completed orangery delivers exactly what was intended — effortless flow from dining space to garden.

The roof lantern draws natural light deep into the room, preventing the space from feeling enclosed. When the bifolding doors are fully opened, the boundary between inside and outside disappears, creating a bright and inviting entertaining area.
